• “Record labels actually invest over a period of five years before they start to actually see some returns because they’re sure of the act. That’s why I’m saying people do music in this country like buy and sell – like buying tomatoes for GhC4 and selling it at GHC6 to make GHC2 profit.”

Award-winning highlife musician, George Kwabena Adu, popularly known as Kwabena Kwabena has said that Ghana cannot boast of a functioning record label because there is none in the country’s music industry.

Record labels, according to thebalancecareers portal, are companies that market recorded music and corresponding videos. They engage in a wide range of functions in the music industry, including new artiste recruitment and development, music publishing, and copyright enforcement.

Kwabena Kwabena said entities priding themselves as record labels in Ghana come nowhere near the criteria.

“What makes a record label? A record label sees talent, knows the potential of the talent, builds that talent, grooms that talent, makes sure that talent gets to the top,” the Adult music hitmaker told Asaase Radio’s Naa Ashorkor on the Between Hours show.

He added: “Now, record labels actually invest over a period of five years before they start to actually see some returns because they’re sure of the act. That’s why I’m saying people do music in this country like buy and sell – like buying tomatoes for GhC4 and selling it at GHC6 to make GHC2 profit.”

“That’s not record label, so people actually come up and say ‘I bought him this and that and I’ve done that for him’. If you are a record label you know what, you can even invest in an artiste and not gain nothing. You don’t come screaming because you are a record label,” the Aso hitmaker added.
